Academy Offers New Chart Auditing Service: Learn more about it and the coverage you already have for audits as an OMIC policyholder
With the increasing frequency of payer audits, it’s only a matter of time before you’re audited by a federal or commercial payer. Make sure your records are in the best shape possible: have the Academy’s coding experts conduct a thorough audit of your chart documentation before payers do.

Did you realize that you already have coverage for related expenses when responding to government and commercial payer audits (as well as conducting shadow audits) should you be subject to investigations? You may be surprised to know that your malpractice policy includes a variety of non-malpractice related coverage benefits for many related exposures, including alleged billing violations, audits, shadow audits, HIPAA/HITECH and electronic media breaches or mishaps. In fact, OMIC was one of the first malpractice carriers in the United States to begin including coverage for tangential exposures faced by ophthalmologists as a result of active medical practice. In 1999, we became the first to offer ophthalmologists a comprehensive billing errors/coding and HIPAA privacy reimbursement benefit within the OMIC malpractice policy.
Thousands of American Academy of Ophthalmology members, even those not insured by OMIC, purchased excess coverage or a stand-alone policy, and may continue to today. In the 14 years since, we’ve expanded the benefits each year, including increased limits offered free as a OMIC coverage benefit ($50,000) and added covered perils. We’ve recorded approximately 400 related claims for investigations and audits. Protect yourself by engaging with the Academy for risk management and loss prevention analysis. Should an event occur in the future, OMIC’s got you covered.
