Policyholder Services

Suspension of Coverage

OMIC offers physicians who temporarily discontinue practice due to family leave, extended illness or temporary disability, return to formal training, sabbatical, or call to active military duty the option of placing their policies on suspension of coverage during their leave of absence. Under a suspension of coverage, no coverage is provided for claims arising from professional services that occur while the policy is suspended. However, the policy remains active for the purpose of reporting claims arising from services rendered prior to the leave of absence. Premiums are discounted during the period of suspension in recognition of the reduced liability exposure. For suspensions due to call to active duty, the premium will be waived during the suspension period.

To qualify for a suspension of coverage, the leave of absence must be for a minimum period of 90 days (60 days for family leave). Suspensions are generally not offered for periods longer than one year. Due to state coverage requirements, OMIC is not able to offer suspension of coverage to physicians who participate in the Kansas Health Care Stabilization Fund or in the Nebraska Excess Liability Fund. Other conditions may apply. If you have any questions regarding suspensions of coverage, please call (800) 562-6642, option 1.
