Does OMIC’s scope of practice exclusion prevent me from treating my family members or friends for non-ophthalmic conditions?

OMIC understands that it is not uncommon for ophthalmologists to render occasional general medical care to friends and family members, such as treating them for minor injuries or illnesses or prescribing antibiotics. This is a primary reason why OMIC’s coverage is not limited exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic conditions. With the exception of procedures specifically excluded or limited under the policy or by endorsement, OMIC’s policy will extend coverage for all direct patient treatment considered to be within the ordinary and customary scope of practice of an ophthalmologist. As required for any patient, the physician should appropriately document the encounter whenever services are provided to friends.
