What is OMIC’s position regarding the performance of blepharoplasty in an office surgical suite as opposed to in a surgery center or hospital?
OMIC’s policy does not exclude nor has the company developed any underwriting guidelines which would prohibit the performance of blepharoplasty in an office surgical suite. However, office blepharoplasty does present risk management concerns. It is an orbital procedure as well as an eyelid procedure since the orbital septum is opened during surgery. Although the likelihood of serious complications is not great, the risk is present.
OMIC believes that performing office blepharoplasty is an acceptable practice as long as prudent risk management principles as outlined in OMIC’s “Office-Based Surgery for Adults” Risk Management Recommentation Letter are followed.
