Can I perform laser vitreolysis to treat floaters under my Surgery Class 2 coverage?

As a retina/vitreous laser procedure, Surgery Class 3 rating is required for coverage of the laser treatment of floaters.

Prudent risk management principles are recommended for reducing the risk of a claim. Before offering laser vitreolysis to a patient, conduct an analysis to determine whether treatment is warranted and ensure the expected benefits to the patient outweigh the procedure’s potential risks, especially in comparison to other treatment options or no treatment. Conduct a careful informed consent discussion that addresses the risks, benefits, and alternatives, and verify that the patient has reasonable expectations regarding outcomes. This consent discussion should be documented in the medical record and in a signed consent form. Also document in the medical record the rationale for selecting laser vitreolysis in lieu of vitrectomy, non-surgical treatment, or no treatment.
