Gaurav Shah MD
Gaurav K. Shah, MD, is a retina specialist at The Retina Institute and Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Co-Director of Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program. He received his medical degree from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis followed by a retina fellowship at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr Shah’s clinical and research interests include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal detachments as well as the economics of retinal healthcare. He has a specific interest on Macular Surgery and Retinal Detachment repair with specific instrumentation design. He has been involved in several pivotal clinical trials including those investigating pegaptanib, ranibizumab, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and combination regimens consisting of PDT and bevacizumab. He is also an investigator for several phase II and phase III clinical trials for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, dry macular degeneration, and new drug delivery devices and is currently the Principal Investigator for the CRAVE study. Dr Shah is a frequent presenter at national and international meetings and has authored 12 book chapters and more than 139 peer-reviewed articles. In addition, he is an elected member of the Retina Society, the Macula Society, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) International Affairs Chair, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, OMIC and part of the ORBIS retina team. He is on the editorial board for Eye Net, OSLI and Review of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is a board examiner for ABO. He also serves as Head of International Affairs for the ASRS.
Steven Rosenfeld MD
Steven I. Rosenfeld, MD, FACS, specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the cornea, infectious and inflammatory eye diseases, refractive surgery, and cataract surgery, in private practice with Delray Eye Associates, PA. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a Clinical Professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Rosenfeld earned his undergraduate degree with honors at the Johns Hopkins University and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He obtained his medical degree at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his medical internship at Yale/ New Haven Hospital and his ophthalmology residency at Barnes/ Jewish Hospital at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Rosenfeld continued his extensive training with a Heed Foundation Fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
Steven I. Rosenfeld, MD, FACS, has authored dozens of textbook chapters and scientific articles on the topics of cataract surgery, PRK and LASIK surgery, corneal transplant surgery, and ocular infections. He has co-authored two recent textbooks — one on Lens and Cataract Surgery and one on Refractive Surgery — under the auspices of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is on the editorial review boards of EyeNet magazine and Focal Points Clinical Modules and is a reviewer for Ophthalmology and the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Rosenfeld has been honored with numerous awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, including the Achievement Award, Senior Achievement Award, Secretariat for Education Award, and Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist Award. He is also a recipient of the Physician’s Recognition Award from the American Medical Association and is listed as one of the best doctors in Best Doctors in America, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Top Doctors, and Florida Super Doctors. Dr. Rosenfeld lectures at ophthalmic meetings nationwide.
Dr. Rosenfeld is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group, the Cornea Society, the Society of Heed Fellows, the Eye Bank Association of America, the Paton Society, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He has been an investigator for various NIH sponsored studies including the Corneal Donor Study, the Fuchs’ Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy Study, and the Zoster Eye Disease Study, as well as numerous trials for the pharmaceutical industry.
Gregory Skuta MD
Dr. Skuta is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dean McGee Eye Institute and the Edward L. Gaylord Professor and Chair of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology in Oklahoma City. A native of Illinois, he received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois College of Medicine respectively. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he was chief resident, and a glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Dr. Skuta also served on the faculty at the University of Michigan’s W. K. Kellogg Eye Center from 1987 to 1992.
Dr. Skuta has contributed to more than 100 publications, book chapters, and educational products and has a particular research and clinical interest in wound healing and its modulation in glaucoma filtering surgery. He served as President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in 2014. From 2007 to 2012, Dr. Skuta was the Academy’s Senior Secretary for Clinical Education. In 2006, Dr. Skuta completed a six-year term as Secretary for Ophthalmic Knowledge for the AAO. He has served on the AAO’s Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Committee of Secretaries, Nominating Committee (chair in 2015), and Awards Committee. Dr. Skuta is currently the AAO representative to the Board of Directors for the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR)/Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR). He also serves on the Claims Committee and Finance Committee for the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance company (OMIC) and will become a member of OMIC’s Board of Directors in 2017.
Dr. Skuta is a Past President of the American Glaucoma Society (2005-2006) and a past Director/Senior Examiner (2001-2008) for the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). He served as chair of the Written Examinations Committee for the ABO and on its Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, Examiners Committee, and Maintenance of Certification Committee. He was an ABO representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Skuta is a past member (2004-2007) of the Board of Governors of the World Glaucoma Association (formerly the Association of International Glaucoma Societies). He has been an editor for the AAO’s ProVision print and CD-ROM educational products and also has served as a principal investigator for the National Eye Institute-sponsored Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) and Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment Study (CIGTS). In addition, he was a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Committee for the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS).
He is a past chair of the American Glaucoma Society’s Program Committee and the AAO’s Self-Assessment Committee. Dr. Skuta has served on the AAO’s Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) Committee and is a current member of the editorial board for the Journal of Glaucoma and a past editorial board member of the AAO’s EyeNet Magazine. He is a past president of the American Eye Study Club and a past director-at-large for the Oklahoma Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2003, Dr. Skuta was elected to active membership in the Glaucoma Research Society (formerly known as the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology). He has delivered lectures and presentations at more than 200 meetings throughout the United States and also in South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and South Africa.
Among Dr. Skuta’s honors and awards are Phi Beta Kappa, president of the University of Illinois Varsity Men’s Glee Club, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Resident Teaching Award from the University of Michigan Department of Ophthalmology, and the Academy’s Achievement Award, Senior Achievement Award, and Life Achievement Honor Award. He is listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World and among the Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Ophthalmologists (Consumers’ Research Council of America), Oklahoma Super Doctors, and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd’s America’s Top Doctors. In 2014, he was inducted into the Tuscola (Illinois) Community High School Hall of Fame.
He and his wife Anne, who is a nurse and Administrative Director of the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, reside in Edmond, Oklahoma. They have three children (Jon, who is Director of Finance for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department; Cate, a physical therapist at Physical Therapy Central in Noble, Oklahoma; and Matt, a film and media studies graduate of the University of Oklahoma – Norman who now lives in Burbank, California). They are members of the United Methodist Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City.
Steven Brown MD
Steven VL Brown, MD, FACS has been an OMIC insured ophthalmologist since its inception in 1987. He has been a board member since 2003 and past Chair of Underwriting and Risk Management. Currently he serves as the Chair of the Nominating Committee, and Vice-Chairman of the Board. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award, Secretariat Award and Senior Achievement Award. He is an Associate Professor at Rush University Medical Center and is in private group practice with concentration in glaucoma and related anterior segment diseases.
Michelle Ying MD
Dr. Ying completed her undergraduate training at Cornell University with a B.S. in chemical engineering. She subsequently completed her Masters in Public Health (epidemiology) at Emory University and was an epidemiologist with the CDC in Atlanta for two years. Dr. Ying earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and was inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. She did a general surgery internship at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) followed by her residency in ophthalmology at the Storm Eye Institute at MUSC where she served as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the New England Eye Center and the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.
After fellowship, Dr. Ying spent several years in Greenville, SC and developed a successful practice treating patients with cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery needs. She joined the Carolina Cataract & Laser Center team of surgeons in January 2014 and specializes in cataract, refractive and corneal surgery.
Dr. Ying has a number of publications in ophthalmology as well as in epidemiology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology and is Board Certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
